holiday egg nog.

In my Chemistry of Cooking class this past semester, we were required to choose a spice and then write a research paper on our spice, as well as find a recipe in which our spice was a key player. We were supposed to buy a subscription to the online Cooks Illustrated for the class, but I wisely opted for the two-week free trial instead.  While researching nutmeg,  I came across the Cooks Illustrated recipe for Holiday Egg Nog.  Perfect.

The truth is, Cooks Illustrate duped me into subscribing for a year...in the busyness of research papers and finals week, I failed to cancel my free trial, and received a delightful little email telling me I had been charged $35 and www.cooksillustrated.com was mine for the gleaning for an entire year.

yay.

(I don't cook.)

By golly, if I've paid $35 to gain access into the wonderful world of perfectly tested recipes and divine creations, I'm going to BAKE.

And this homemade egg nog? Well it's worth making. You may gag at the typical eggy, thick, coats-your-arteries-in-two-minutes grocery store egg nog, but the homemade Cooks Illustrated egg nog is no joke.  You practically make a custard, you fold in freshly whipped cream, and you're supposed to use fresh nutmeg.

I would post pictures...but I already made it.

I would post the recipe, but I have this mental image of the powers that be at www.cooksillustrated.com coming after me brandishing a wooden spoon and a can opener to show me just what I can and can not do with that $35 subscription.

I'm off to make Christmas cards. Stay tuned.
